"FOREST RANCH — Unlike watermelon, or say apricots, I've never been aware of blueberry season; never thought to myself, "these aren't quite ripe yet," or "I can't wait until it's blueberry time!"
Blueberries are kind of ubiquitous in the grocery stores. There aren't many weeks of the year when they're not available, and they are consistently round blue and flavorful. I was surprised to learn, sitting across a table from grower John Carlon and his wife Armen from Sierra Cascade Blueberries, that local blueberries have a definite season that begins now.
To the farm
Sunday morning we drove up past Forest Ranch, across the headwaters of Little Chico Creek, and up to the top of Doe Mill Ridge to find the Carlons' organic blueberry farm and watch the first day of harvest. The area is pretty in a gritty Napa Valley way: rolling hills planted with rows of grapes on one side of the road and blueberries on the oth"
