Microsoft's Virtual World Presence Moves to ReactionGrid
"Microsoft Island on Second Life is shutting down on October 31 2009. The SL .NET User Group, IT Pros in SL, and all other Microsoft Island user groups are encouraged to head to http://reactiongrid.com and join fellow Microsoft professionals and enthusiasts on ReactionGrid for user group meetings, events, and a bit more space for everyone."
"A farewell / welcome party is planned for October 31 on both Microsoft Island on Second Life, and on ReactionGrid, to celebrate the move, and there will be some freebies that attendees can win during the event, including a full copy of Visual Studio 2008 Professional edition."

Most speak widely used languages like German, French, and Spanish, but others speak languages such as Portuguese, Turkish, and Korean. Many also speak English, but often not well. How do we communicate with them when we meet them? We can and should learn foreign languages, but no one can learn them all. Is there another way?"

"Yes. Over a half dozen automatic language translating HUD’s are available in Second Life. Some of them are free. Each of them translates at least 32 languages. The odds are that one of them will work for you. They only translate typed text at present – automatic translation of speech will be a major technical challenge – but they should allow you to hold a basic conversation in a wide variety of languages."

The author of the book Coming of Age in SL, Tom Boellstorff, was the speaker at today's SLER meeting. Needless to say the crowd was packed in and it was a great time for everyone. Each of us got the first chapter to his book in the form of a ThinC object.
